-it's almost over

this year was memorable.
to say the least.
2010 will go down in my book as the "learning year".

learning how to........
-slow down and pull it in
-surround myself with happiness
-enjoy the moment
-lean on my husband
-manage money
-find some spiritual maturity

a vague post about seemingly generic points.
this was probably one of the most important years of my life.

i'm very excited about 2011 and all the the new places, faces and experiences it holds.
things are going to be awesome.
i can tell.

SO MUCH HAPPINESS
by Naomi Shihab Nye

It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.
With sadness there is something to rub against,
a wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
When the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,
something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.

But happiness floats.
It doesn't need you to hold it down.
It doesn't need anything.
Happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,
and disappears when it wants to.
You are happy either way.
Even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house
and now live over a quarry of noise and dust
cannot make you unhappy.
Everything has a life of its own,
it too could wake up filled with possibilities
of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
and love even the floor which needs to be swept,
the soiled linens and scratched records. . . .

Since there is no place large enough
to contain so much happiness,
you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
into everything you touch. You are not responsible.
You take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
for the moon, but continues to hold it, and share it,
and in that way, be known.

-run fast for your mother and fast for your father

so remember my theory about the more i like the people, the better the song?
we the chavez family just took my favorite.
dog days are over by florence + the machine.
seriously.
try listening to this song full blast and NOT dance.
it's impossible.
like trying to hold a newborn and NOT smell its hair.
or like thinking about swimming horses and NOT smiling.
impossible.

another impossible- not knowing how freaking perfect you'd look with short hair until chemo and radiation forces it. val is a beautiful, fun and loving person. we're all so glad her dog days are over!

-another day

a couple of things that i need to remember about today:
- a woman stopped me at the store and told me that ade looks EXACTLY like ricky martin.
- brooks told me that dads are more fun than moms because dads "don't take a lot of photo shoots"
- ade barfed carrots, chocolate syrup and blueberry soda all over the front bathroom but then sang "away in a manger" in the shower while i cleaned it up.
- i discovered the smoke house at whole foods. i have 6lbs of medium rare grilled steak in my fridge. our tacos tonight were incrediballs.
- brandon looked rad in his levi's.
- i listened to "dog days are over" by florence + the machine 7 times.
- i found running shoes AND trail shoes today on sale at Sole sports and my sales guy's name was flash.
- i discovered a new videographer to obsess over.
- i got to talk to my big brother.
- brooks blessed the stray cat in my parent's neighborhood in his prayers.
- i saw my closet floor for the first time in 3 months.
- my pubic bone still feels cracked when i'm running.
- kerri posted this message on my facebook page: "you missed the best tea party this morning. Judd made strawberry popovers and Fritz and I made daisy chains and embroidered handkerchiefs."
- she may have been referring to santa's gifts to the boys.
- brooks has been devouring his new human body book- asking me questions like "are brains squishy or hard?"
- i caught brandon glued to harry potter. again. i think i've finally converted him.
- i finally listened to pandora on my blackberry. jayZ this morning.
- a package from my sister arrived.
- lew and i plowed through victoria's platters of gluten free happy heather christmas treats.
- brooks told ade he has a motor cycle in his bummy.
-landon stopped by and told brooks that he needs to tell his mom to take him to the park after we go to costco. we love that knuck.
- ade told me he needed hot tea.
- the boys wrestled like squirrels.

-burn baby burn!

chandler fire just scored this world's greatest employee.

congrats matty!! we're so excited to have a personal fire fighter on hand to resuscitate the diabetic, deliver our babies, move our fridge and run the canals with.

-a dozen

when i was 19 i sat behind brandon in an ethics and values class.
our teacher was larry harper.
he was a utah boy with D-rings on his backpack and leather Simple clogs.
i watched the back of his head for an entire semester and would say anything i could think of to make him turn around and realize how funny and clever i was.
never in my wildest dreams would i have ever believed we would be where we are today.
i got that cute utah boy to love me somehow.
12 years of marriage- he's still the one.

-what day is it anyways?

wanna know why i only blog about taking pictures and other's homes for xmas?
because that's all i've been doing.
but i think i'm pretty much done at this point.
if i haven't contacted you about taking photos in december- we'll see you in the new year.
if i have, please ignore the glitter embedded into my scalp and the arms scratched by evergreen.
occupational hazards.
this month's been a blast.
especially with friends like these:
i love the de orta fam.
it is very stressful taking pictures of another photographer and their family.
he'll see.
when he does our next weekend.

-deck the halls

good news this week- decorating for christmas party #1 wrapped.
gooder news this week- mariah was in town for decorated party.
goodest news this week- party with decorations had a salsa bar. holy guacamole. you have no idea.
i was so exhausted by the time the client's guests started arriving- mariah had to smack me around a bit to get me to hurry up and take some pictures.
the TWELVE FOOT WHITE TREE was my achilles tendon.
it was large, spacey and large.
defeated until somehow rotated 45 degrees (without my knowing) to expose it's less showpiecey angles. curses, spoiled again.

this tree is mother's favorite child.
somewhere in that dark corner are pussy willow branches, pheasant feathers, sprigs of gold dush, grapevines and hydrangea clusters.
i've never known a love like this before.

fresh wintery floral arrangements by my new favorite florist:
mrs. g's floral design.
(aka jonelle)

and then there was a salsa bar.

so happy it all pulled together at the last hour.
and having mariah there as a witness to my completely random life made it that much merrier.

-the mormon inside rears it's head

i got a little cutesy this year with breana's birthday.
brea is brooks's best friend.
always has been.
i had a couple of ideas for her gift this year but when the right one hit me- it made me tear up.
i had this little idea of making brooks and breana dolls with velcro hands.
so even when she feels too old to play with dolls, she'll still have these as keepsakes.
i drew up the patterns and went for it.
and i had tears the whole time i did it.
they're perfectly imperfect.

there's also a fran (brea's cat)

we love our little breana.

-skate and destroy

this one time i was pulling into the neighborhood and i saw audrey on her son's skateboard.
i said "hey. i wanna do that."
shortly after, she text me an invite to shred down at the park.
i felt so cool, so hip and to avoid acting overly excited, i turned her down.
we rescheduled for that night, because all of the real awesome skate tuffs roll at night.
(and because that's the only time our husbands could be home to babysit and it would be harder for others to see our wipe outs).
it was the best, best, best.
and then like the good suburban housewives we are, we capped our gnarly night off with lavender soda, some minty kombucha and a tub of gluten free chocolate chip cookies.

this was my first time and audrey's 4th and a half time.
enjoy.

here's some images of her and her younger siblings.

-vanity sucks

dear me,
i know you feel super ugly everyday living through the weird, stringy, undefined stages of growing out your hair but hang in there sister. there are only 2 styles that you look good in- short and long. the rest of it will make you feel like a filthy piece of bluh but you were hellbent on chopping 13 inches off last year and now you need to live with that rash decision.

you're a year in.
one more to go until you're back on that self-esteem super hair expressway.
and yes, it's ok to pull it back everyday.
and no, it's not ok to talk yourself into chopping bangs just to mix things up.
growing out your hair is the great humbler and you're somehow growing on the inside too.

i know it doesn't help to have pure silver regrowth but it's just an "illusion" of female pattern baldness- not the real deal. and what's so bad about having to retouch your roots every TWO AND A HALF WEEKS? i'm sure lot's of girls would love to endure that chemical high bi-weekly too. (brain cells are so early 2000's anyways).

now remember me, looking at pictures like the one posted below will only cause you more pain. yes, we loooove short hair. but we looooove long hair better. and so does our husband. (not sure why i just started speaking to myself in plural). so resist heather. resist and resist.

sincerely,
heather

ps- if the length of my hair really effects my mood so dramatically, does this make me a boring person?

-for the rrrrrecord (with a trilled r)

i'm cleansed.
detoxed.
freed from blech.
this may be the most annoying post ever but it's my blog and i want this documented.
in the end of August my neighbor Audrey asked me if i'd like to join her for a little detox program. i've never done anything like that before so i said yes. little did i know what i was signing up for. the next day she took me to whole foods, handed me a little book to read with the important pages dog eared and wished me luck. that next day- a saturday- i started the Fast Track Detox Diet as outlined by Ann Louise Gittleman in her book by the same name.

i kept track of everything over the next 12 days including my emotions and physical progression by writing it all down on a giant poster board taped to my fridge. i finally took it down last week but didn't have the heart to throw it away until i made permanent note of my journey. this is what i did (note- all produce was organic, the meat was organic/cage free/ free range/grass fed and the eggs were cage free):

day 1. brussel sprouts, beet greens, oj, garlic, onions, celery, beets, dandelion root tea (drt), pear, strawberries, salmon and turkey bacon. i was busy with a photo shoot so i didn't feel hungry and i even took my own tea and sweetener to the restaurant that night for dinner.

day 2. cauliflower, broccoli, kale, oj, onions, eggs, celery, drt, carrot, pear, turkey bacon and salmon. i had the WORST headache probably due to caffeine withdrawal. leaving church early to take an hour nap helped a lot. i had this weird super runny nose all day too.

day 3. brussel sprouts, kale, beet greens, oj, lemon, eggs, onions, a VERY dirty artichoke, carrot, strawberries, sliced turkey, chicken breast and turkey bacon. i started thinking more clearly about some of my root personal issues now that i didn't have food as a distraction.

day 4. broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, parsley, oj, lemon, eggs, onions, beets, asparagus, apple, carrot, pear, beef, turkey bacon and chicken breast. i finally pooped for the first time since day 1 and felt surges of energy all day. i got unusually excited about going grocery shopping.

day 5. broccoli, cauliflower, cilantro, oj, lemon, onions, garlic, eggs, artichoke, beets, strawberries, apple, turk bacon and beef. i was DYING for flavor. i snuck a handful of salted almonds and almost died with how good they tasted. i actually spit them out because i wanted to make it through this whole program without cheating. i was very physically weak today.

day 6. cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, chard, parsley, romaine lettuce, an orange, egg, garlic, beets, zucchini, tomatoes, squash, carrots, apple, flaxseed, turk bacon and chicken. i had much more energy and absolutely no headache. i felt tired only towards the end of the day when i should feel tired and i noticed that the eczema on my hands was dramatically clearing up. i also started noticing an extremely bad chemical taste in my mouth.

day 7. cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, parsley, oj, egg, onions, drt, flax seed, apple, raspberries, turkey burger and turkey bacon. i felt great!! the gross saliva taste got stronger.

day 8. detox day- drank the detox juice all day long. did not feel hungry until around 5pm.

day 9. cabbage, cilantro, oj, lemon, lime, eggs, onion, drt, celery, strawberries, flax seed, carrot, turk bacon, beef, chicken and yogurt.

day 10. cabbage, cilantro, chard, oj, lim, onion, daikon radish, garlic, artichoke, blueberries, carrot, flax seed, turkey burger, turkey bacon and yogurt.

day 11. cabbage, cilantro, oj, lemon, onion garlic, asparagus, eggs, green onion, turk bacon, chicken and yogurt. finally allowed myself some treats: goji berries, almonds, craisens, quinoa, figs and dried apricots.

day 12. i didn't keep record because i was sick of keeping record but i did stick to the plan.

results: this detox with intense work outs 4 days a week with my personal trainer- vin vallejo- put me in the best shape of my life. my skin is clear, my eye sight has improved, i'm in a better mood, i sleep more soundly at night and wake up refreshed, i'm not tired during the days, I HAVE NO HEADACHES, i feel more creative, my stomach feels and looks flatter, i don't feel bloated, i don't experience pms or menstrual cramping, i have several bm's throughout the day, i'm rarely hungry and i feel FREE.

moving forward: i am maintaining a diet rich in liver loving organic produce as well as eating healthy and lean meats and now i'm gluten and casein free as well. it was an extreme change to my lifestyle but i'm 2 months in and feel like a completely different person. obviously i've lost my sense of humor too as i've not made a single joke through this entire post.

it all started with a simple suggestion from a good friend and a really smart book- and i feel like a better heather.

-click, click, click

it wasn't 90 degrees today.
i'm starting to fall back in like with arizona.
our relationship is on the mend- and with the forecasted thunderstorms coming tomorrow, we may be getting back together again.
because cooler weather makes for a happier, less sweaty, better animal sound making photographer.
which is better for business.
i'll post the videos on my photo blog soon.
but not before i finish playing with the lightening mcqueen carwash we scored at target today.
ps- brandon told me that i buy toys for myself more than for the boys.
pps- he's totes right.

-FYI

let's make a list of ways you'll know i'm mad at you if you're my spouse:
1. i'll wear my sock monkey pj's to bed
2. i'll rent barbara steisand movies to watch. alone. in bed. wearing previously mentioned jammers.
3. i'll cook only 2 (rather than the usual 3) options every meal. so you can either have mac and cheese with the boys or some of my swiss chard and stewed tomato soup.
4. i'll stop sending you "fun" MMS texts during the day.
5. i'll pick up a book from another tween series borrowed from my 8th grade babysitter in the middle of our conversations.
6. i'll eat the rest of the brownies.
7. i'll send the boys in to tickle you when you fail to respond to your alarm clock for an hour straight.
and
8. i'll blog about stupid lists like this

good thing i think you're the cutest thing on the planet.
cuteness gets you very far in this house.
